Germany’s Food Safety Agency has issued a “strong warning” that “overdose” of Viagra can cause serious reactions, but not life threatening. The agency added in a statement that “as the situation has become, the risk of overdose has decreased and there are no reported cases of death from this potentially lethal event.”
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) issued a statement in June that “the risk of overdose can be fatal. The EMA’s advice is for individuals to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of poisoning and to seek medical advice from their GP or local poison control centre (“PCRC”)”.
The statement said that the maximum recommended amount of Viagra is 100mg per day. However, the EMA has found that there are “some cases of severe adverse events” and there is “no specific reason to believe that this product is fatal.”
A spokeswoman for the EMA said that the agency was “reviewing further information from the EMA’s own scientific and regulatory teams” about the potential risk of overdose and advised patients and caregivers to seek medical advice from their GP or PCRC.
The EMA said that the information was “very helpful” and advised patients to report any suspected adverse events to their doctor immediately.
“The EMA has provided further information about this product. For those who require treatment with this product, it is recommended that you speak to a poison control centre and tell them to contact a local poison control centre immediately,” it added.
In the statement, the EMA said that the FDA had identified “more than 10 deaths in the United States in a year” and that there was no evidence that this product has been associated with adverse events.
The EMA said that it was “well-founded that this product could be a dangerous and potentially fatal adverse event”. The agency had also issued a safety alert for Viagra for men 18 and older who are currently taking the drug.In an email to CNN, Dr. Leonore Tiefer, chief medical officer at the FDA’s agency, said: “This is concerning an FDA product that has been linked to serious adverse reactions and has yet to be identified and there is no way to confirm or deny that the product contains sildenafil citrate.
